Overcoming Rejection

Rejection Picture

Spring of 1981, I get a letter from my then girlfriend.

Calling across towns back then was expensive (they actually charged you per minute - can you believe that??)

It wasn't unusual to a receive a letter from her - we probably averaged one per week.

But this one was different.

This was what was/is known as a "Dear John" letter except it was a "Dear David" letter.

Yep - "I am breaking up with you - we are done."

Ever receive one of those?

A crushing break up that blows you back; especially when you were not expecting it.

I was CRUSHED!

Got the rest of the letters she had written, had a little funeral and burned them.

Lesser things had happened to me in my life by then, but nothing of this magnitude.

One word that would do it justice:

REJECTED.

Ever have a time in life when you experienced flat out rejection??

What does REJECTION do to a person?

Social rejection increases anger, anxiety, depression, jealousy and sadness.  It reduces performance on difficult intellectual tasks, and can also contribute to aggression and poor impulse control.
~ Psychological Science, 2011

Why Do REJECTIONS Hurt So Much?

Social pain (such as being rejected and let down by others) and physical pain are felt in the same part of the brain.  In other words, the brain can't tell the difference between the pain of a breakup and the pain of a broken arm.
~ Researcher Naomi Eisenberg at UCLA

Temptations we can feel when REJECTED:
  • Self-Doubt and Negative Self-Talk
  • Avoidance
  • Seeking Instant Gratification - over eating, shopping, or substance abuse.

This past week, I had the privilege of hearing Jamie Kern Lima share her story

in Austin, TX at the Growthday Event.

She went from being a Denny's waitress to being an American Entrepreneur, investor and media personality.

She is recognized as the co-founder of IT Cosmetics and the first female Chief Executive Officer of a L'Oréal brand in the company's history.

In 2016, Jamie Kern Lima sold IT Cosmetics to L'Oréal for $1.2 billion and has been included on the Forbes' list of "America's Richest Self-Made Women" since 2017.

The amount of NO's and REJECTION she received (3 years) before ANYTHING happened with her self made brand is off the charts.

NO after NO after NO after NO.

She was even told that she was too heavy and not pretty enough for them to invest in her make up.

BUT SHE NEVER GAVE UP!

Some of her convictions on the other side of REJECTION:

  • Believe that you are worthy & keep that in alignment
  • Set backs are SET UPS
  • "NO" is not personal
  • Our harshest NO's can come from ourselves
  • In-Authenticity fails every time
  • NO One can you tell you you don't have what it takes
  • Rejection has a negative effective on me..UNTIL ONE DAY IT DOESN'T
  • BE BRAVE
  • When you change your relationship with Rejection, everything changes
  • Rejection is GOD's PROTECTION
  • Rejection is REDIRECTION = 1 Step Closer!

"Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse."
~ Romans 12:14

In hindsight, I am BEYOND grateful that God broke off that relationship with that "Dear Dave" letter back in the 80's.
Then, CRUSHED.  Today, GRATEFUL!

If I would have never received that letter, maybe I would have never met and married my Awesome wife Margie.
What a short, yet powerful scripture above.

Bless.

Pray for.

Don't Curse those who persecute and sometime reject you.

Even those in the past...

Strive and pray to be like Joseph (OT) who was completely rejected by his brothers and yet blessed them incredibly later down the road!
